ABOUT ME

My name is Caitlin Giroux. I am a visual artist and licensed PreK-12 art teacher. I have experience teaching an American, IB/MYP and AP curriculum in the U.S. and abroad. Currently, I teach at an international school in Germany. I enjoy the rich learning environment created by students and faculty from many different cultures and ethnic backgrounds.

I am a dedicated and hardworking teacher who strives to help my students make real world connections through their explorations in the visual arts. I love being an active member of the school community and collaborating with faculty members to give students a cross-curricular learning experience.

My parents learned when I was very young that they could take me anywhere as long as I had a pencil and a piece of paper in hand. Thus my passion for the arts began. Throughout my life I have explored and developed skills in many different media including drawing, painting, textiles, sculpture and ceramics. My previous work in the fashion industry has led me to develop a course in ethical and sustainable fashion to empower young people to be change makers in our over-consuming world.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Background & Expertise

ART & DESIGN TEACHER

In my 9+ years of experience as an art teacher, I have worked with students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. I encourage my students to create art which is personally meaningful to foster imagination, creativity, and independence in a studio setting.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Beyond the art room, I enjoy sharing my passions and interests with students in other ways. I have coached track as well as Girls on the Run. I am currently working with students from the Fine Arts Council to plan an Empty Bowls fundraiser for the spring semester.

TRAINING & CERTIFICATIONS

I continue to seek professional development opportunities to expand my skillset and enrich my teaching. I am trained in Advanced Placement Art & Design, MYP Visual Arts, and am a Google Certified Educator!

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

As an art teacher, my goal is for students to explore and interpret the visual world we live in. I hope my students will develop an understanding of how the arts connect us as humans across cultures, belief systems and ethnic backgrounds.

I want to give students the experience of how a working artist creates in a studio setting. Not only will they develop artistic skills, but they will learn to communicate their ideas and reflect on the creative process to discover their own, unique voice.

A mentor from graduate school introduced me to Project Based Learning which set the foundation of how I organize my lessons and curriculum. I think it is important for students to make the connection to art with real-world experiences in other subjects to find meaning and value in their work. This model also allows students to learn from their mistakes in a safe space while they expand their critical and creative thinking skills. I hope to provide the building blocks for students to become curious, life long learners.
